SJC requests attorney general’s opinion in Chapman case

The lawyer for four people fighting to keep serial child rapist Wayne Chapman behind bars won a victory Monday as the Supreme Judicial Court requested that Attorney General Maura Healey file an amicus brief in their appeal to prevent Chapman’s release.

Wendy Murphy, the lawyer behind the appeal, said she has never seen a similar request.

“It’s a very good sign for us,” she said.

At least four teenage boys dead in East Bridgewater crash

EAST BRIDGEWATER — Four male teenagers were killed and a fifth was injured in a horrific rollover crash on Route 106 Saturday afternoon that shocked local residents and first responders alike, officials said.

East Bridgewater police and fire received multiple 911 calls reporting a car had crashed into a tree at 558 West St. at 4:06 p.m., Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said.

Cardinal O’Malley apologizes for not responding to letter that raised questions about sex abuse by fellow cardinal

Boston Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley apologized Monday for the way his office handled a 2015 letter containing allegations against Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington who was removed from the ministry in June and resigned in July after reports that he had sexually assaulted minors and abused seminarians.

O’Malley’s statement was released Monday evening, more than a month after news outlets reported that Rev. Boniface Ramsey, a priest in New York, penned the letter that raised questions on McCarrick.
